1/72 Hasegawa F/A-18F Super Hornet

VFA-102 Diamondbacks

Greetings all. My modeling desk has been very quiet over the Christmas and New Year period, but having the opportunity to visit the US in January, I did some shopping :) One goodie that had not hit our shelves at that time was the new Hasegawa Super Hornet. Well needless to say it made it back to Sydney in my suitcase and then straight on the bench (yep it never even saw the inside of my cupboard)

I enjoy seeing models of aircraft in flight, and I intend to use my collection of 1/72 kits for this purpose (leaving their 1/48 cousins for detailing). Being a 2003 tooling from Hasegawa, you would expect the kit to go together pretty well, and it did for the most part.

It is my intention to model a Tomcat in VF-102 markings (using CAM sheet 72-046) and display both aircraft together (sorta before and after)

The weapons loadout is a typical CAS fit (as documented in a TwoBobs OIF sheet). The kit decals where used and I trimmed the excess carrier film, they performed well.

I'm planning to build most of my 1/72 kits out of the box, but I fix mistakes where I find them and add detail where it makes a noticeable improvement. Following is a summarized list of what I did and used,

- Added two pilot figures (actually resin copies from another kit)
- Corrected poor fit of canopy in the closed position.
- Detailed the kit seats (mainly headrests) and added detail behind the rear cockpit.
- Supplemented the kit weapons (2 x AIM-9X and 2 x AIM-120) with a couple of Mk84 and one GBU-16 LGB
- Replaced fins on AIM-9X with metal sheet (actually a flattened Coke can)
- Replaced decals for formation lights with more accurate colour match (from a Detail & Scale sheet)
- Added a stand !!

My only gripe with this kit was the very poor fit of the canopy when closed (a lot of careful scraping and sanding) and the horrible seam present in the upper roof of each intake (corrected by 10thou plastic card).

The model was painted using Humbrol paints and weathered with oils. All metallic areas are Alclad II.

Well hope you like the result. I'm keeping my eye out for the upcoming 1/48 Revell Super Bug.

Gary
