1/48 Hobbycraft De Haviland Vampire Mk I

This early British jet fighter was developed during the final years of WWII. It was powered by the Rolls Royce “Nene” axial flow turbojet. Its unique shape branded it with the name “Vampire”. A long line of very successful aircraft derived from this initial concept. With its twin boom tail and stubby fuselage these magnificent fighters served well many nations throughout the world.

This Hobbycraft kit came out in the early 1990’s and I had to have one.  A whole family of variants followed, but the one I liked the most was the MK I. It is a pretty simple and straightforward kit, with fine engraved panel lines and not too much detail in the landing gear wells or the cockpit. I chose to build it straight out of the box. It was a very quick build and without much problem. The only area that gave me a hard time was the canopy fit. I had to work with it quite a bit.

I finished the kit with Modelmaster enamels. To apply the decals I coated the entire kit with Future acrylic floor wax. I used the kits decals, which were of excellent quality. I sealed the decals with a coat of Future and then I coated the model with Testor’s Dullcote. Once the matt varnish dried I attached all of the gears and the gear well doors and the external fuel tanks. I enjoyed this kit a lot and I recommend it to those who enjoy the early jets. Happy modeling,

Edward
