1/48 Tamiya Shiden N1K1J

This Tamiya kit is a little gem. It is very easy to build and finish. The level of detail is acceptable and only needs minor improvements. This kit is part of the second-generation Tamiya models, which now stands for its high quality and ease of construction.

For detail buffs, this kit is a very accurate base to start a super-detailed model of this outstanding design of the late war in the Pacific. The general shape is very accurate, and the detail in the cockpit is adequate for the scale. The instrument panel only presents the dial faces, but its shape is accurate.  I painted it according to the instructions and with a sharp scriber I scratched the dial needles. Then I coated the dial faces with several coats of clear acrylic wax. The result was a convincing instrument panel.  I chose to paint the interior of the cockpit area with Sky type “S”, with semi-gloss black details. I also painted the switches and control knobs in steel and detailed some with a touch of red and yellow.  I added a pre-painted photo etched seat belt and that completed the cockpit.

The Landing gear wells are deep, but there is not a lot of detail, except the framework. I painted it with Aluminum Metalizer and sealed it. The rear wing joint does not fall where there is an actual panel line, so it must be filled and sanded smooth. I did not have to fill as the joint was tight and only minor sanding was required.

The engine is very well detailed and the only thing that could improve it was adding the ignition harness.  I painted the engine in a Dark Metallic color, 65% Semi-Gloss Black, 30% Silver and 5% Dark Blue. I sprayed this color mixture and after it dried I applied a wash of Black and dry-brushed the cylinder heads with a Steel color. I used a very thin brass wire to add the ignition harness and did not paint it. I thought it looked pretty good that way. I used Imperial Japanese Navy Green and INJ Sky Grey by ModelMaster. I painted the landing gear in “Old Silver” by Floquil. I used the kit’s decals. I really enjoyed building this kit and I am looking forward to building the Kyoufu, the predecessor to this wonderful looking fighter.

Happy modeling,

Edward
